# Smart Exit Order Types: Choose How Your Bot Closes Trades

> Choose exactly how a position gets closed, not just when to buy.

A good entry is only half the strategy. Botico lets you pick the exit structure that matches how you actually want to trade, instead of forcing every bot into the same single order type.

## Three ways to close a position

| | Bracket Order | One Buy One Sell | Multi Buy Single Sell |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Buys | Once, on a signal | Once, on a signal | Several times, on signals |
| Closes on | Take-profit or stop-loss, whichever fills first | A sell signal | A sell signal, all at once |
| Good for | Fixed limits on every trade, no chart watching | Strategies with clear entry and exit signals | Averaging into a position over time |

## Bracket Order: set it and forget it

Take-profit and stop-loss are armed the moment the position opens. Whichever hits first closes the trade and cancels the other, so there's no need to watch the chart.

Your worst case is known before the trade starts: the stop-loss caps the loss, and the take-profit locks in the gain you planned for. This pairing is known as one cancels the other, or OCO. Both levels come from the bot's risk config, so every trade follows the same rules.

## One Buy One Sell: simple and predictable

Buy once on a signal, then wait for a dedicated sell signal to close the position. Clean and straightforward for strategies built around clear entry and exit signals.

While the position is open, the bot doesn't add to it. It holds until your sell conditions agree, so every trade has one entry and one exit, and your results are easy to read trade by trade.

## Multi Buy Single Sell: build a position, exit together

Keep buying on signal to build up a position over time, then exit the whole stack at once when the sell signal fires. Useful for averaging into a position instead of committing all at once.

Each new buy adds to the same position, so your average entry price moves with every buy. When your sell conditions agree, everything you've accumulated is sold in one go.

## Set your risk once, reuse it everywhere

Every exit type runs with a risk config: how much of your balance each trade uses, the gain at which it takes profit and the loss at which it exits. Save it as a profile and reuse it across every strategy, so the limits exist before the first order does.

## Test every exit before you trust it

The same strategy can behave very differently with a different exit. [Backtest it](https://botico.ai/features/backtesting/) with each exit type on real market history, then put the runs side by side and compare returns, drawdown and win rate.

When one convinces you, launch a paper or live bot with the same exit type and risk config. Nothing to re-enter by hand.

## Common questions

### Which exit type should I start with?

If you want fixed limits on every trade, start with Bracket Order. If your strategy has clear sell conditions, use One Buy One Sell. If you'd rather average into positions, use Multi Buy Single Sell. Backtest all three to see which suits your strategy.

### Can I backtest every exit type?

Yes. Bracket Order, One Buy One Sell and Multi Buy Single Sell are all supported in backtesting, with the exact risk settings you'd use live.

### Where do the take-profit and stop-loss levels come from?

From the bot's risk config, where you set how much of your balance each trade uses, the take-profit and the stop-loss. Save it as a profile and reuse it across strategies.

### What does "one cancels the other" mean?

With a Bracket Order, the take-profit and stop-loss are placed together. When one of them fills, the other is cancelled automatically, so the position can't be closed twice.

### Do I need to watch the chart?

No. Every exit type runs on its own: the bot opens and closes positions based on your signals and risk settings, around the clock.
